Protecting Children

HealthLink is proud to be a founding board member of the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow. A coalition of citizens, scientists, health professionals, union members and educators, the alliance is striving to correct fundamental flaws in business practices and government policies that allow toxins to trespass into our bodies.

Goal: Create proactive policies to prevent harm before the damage is done and support innovation to advance the use of safer technologies, materials and solutions.

July 2005 "Body Burden: The Pollution in Newborns", analyzes randomly selected umbilical cord blood samples from  U.S.-born babies for industrial chemicals, pesticides and pollutants including mercury, fire retardants, and the Teflon chemical PFOA, with startling results. Read full report: www.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden2/execsumm.php

Key findings:

  • The testing revealed that the babies averaged 200 contaminants in their blood

  • Of 413 chemicals tested, a total of 287 contaminants were detected -- 209 for the first time ever

  • 180 of these chemicals cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests

Asthma

  • Rates for children under 5 increased by 160% between 1980 and 1994

  • Rates for children between 5 and 14 increased 74%

  • Doctor's office visits have doubled

Childhood Cancer
  • Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma rates for girls tripled between 1992 and 1997

  • Kidney cancer rates nearly doubled between 1992 and 1997

  • Overall incidence of cancers for children under 14 increased almost 21% from 1975 to 1998 nation wide

Behavioral and Learning Disabilities

  • U. S. children in special education increased 191% between 1977 and 1994

  • Nearly 17% of U. S. children suffer from one or more learning, developmental or behavioral disabilities

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects between 3 and 12%

All of the above health issues have been linked to toxins in our environment. It is time to start protecting ourselves and finding different approaches to the policies that have allowed such escalation in childhood diseases.
